Santa Fe GroupJust before the end of the 20th Century, eight leaders in the oral health profession were drawn together in Santa Fe by their concerns about the health of the American public. Against the context provided by the Surgeon General's Report "Oral health in America" and a number of other public and private industry reports, they identified critical issues in a variety of areas, including disparities in oral health status and access to care, inefficiencies, inequities, and failures in public and private oral health care delivery systems, and a paucity of leadership training and mentoring in the oral health professions. Internationally renowned, the founding members of Santa Fe Group drew on their experiences in the ranks of scholarship, research, professional and corporate leadership, government service, and education to formulate a philosophy which places high priority on realistic outcomes which can be implemented and evaluated. Within the domain of health care programs and policies, Santa Fe Group seeks to identify and implement effective solutions to significant problems in health care. This approach to improving the health of the American public reflects a shared belief that public/private partnerships can effectively engage and resolve major problems to provide significant social benefit. Through a variety of program initiatives, Santa Fe Group addresses the challenges of health care today, convening leaders and decision makers to effect change in a creative and responsible manner. Underlying this initiative is the recognition that health care leadership is multidimensional and that good leaders possess wisdom, judgment, curiosities, and communication skills that reach well beyond the boundaries of specific disciplines. With this principle in mind, Santa Fe Group undertakes projects in which it can involve individuals who show leadership potential, integrating them in significant research and policy analysis activities.
